Here’s a good spot to leave comments that you want others to see, like barge shares, propane delivery issues, general neighborhood type items.  Just leave a comment and it should be updated pretty quickly.

  4. Looking for a way to tie up a boat near the ramp on Prevost. Ideally would buy into a share of an existing dock. Or, would purchase an existing buoy. Anyone no longer boating and have something like this to sell? Please let me know! Thank you

  5. We have the little camping cabin and “Scooby Doo” van at 202 Marine Lane (lot 81) and have recently purchased a plane that allows us to use the grass airstrip. Consequently, we plan to come out to the island more often, and have plans to clean up the lot, haul the old van off island to scrap it, and possibly build a larger cabin and dig a well.

    – Is there a well drilling contractor on-island?
    – Does the County have incentives to remove dead vehicles?
    – We would like to mail a few items out but do not have a box in the mail shack. How should we address items for general delivery?

Appreciate any comments and looking forward to spending more time on Stuart Island.

    Thanks!

    Bill Chambers and Dan Lee
    La Conner, WA

P.S. We will be selling our 15’-11” Arima if anyone is interested. It’s been a great little boat for trips to the island, but we just won’t use it often enough now that we can fly out more easily.

    • Hi Bill, congrats on the new plane! Maybe this will help.
I don’t know of a drilling contractor on the island. There is a driller on island from time to time, I think his name is “Mauldin”, perhaps Friday Harbor?
I don’t know of any county incentives to remove dead vehicles. The Humpback barge seems the best way to get derelict vehicles off the island.
Mail – the next time you are on island, go to the mail shack and find an open slot and put your name on it. IF there isn’t an open slot, maybe get someone you know, that already has one, to let you put in a divider so you will have a slot. There isn’t that much mail traffic there, for most of us anyway. Mail to our island gets sorted, and letters will end up in your slot. Packages will be found in the mail shed as well. Amazon Prime delivers, and on delivery day you can hardly get in the mail shed it is so full!

In case you haven’t flown into our island much in the past, remember, there are so many deer on the island, just watch out for them. In late afternoon they graze on the strip and they are pretty fearless. Even if you chase them off, they sometimes just go right back on the runway. Also, when it has been raining, the runway can be really slick, keep that in mind. And if it has been raining for a while, it can be really muddy. We try to get notes on the website about runway conditions, but it is not always current, be careful.
And, as always, watch for pedestrians and vehicles.

Glad you are finally getting up to use your property. Come on over to the east end Camp Everhappy and say Hi.
      Regards, Greg Bruce

      • As Greg mentioned, Mauldin’s Well Service Inc. is the way to go. They are based in Friday Harbor. Call Al Mauldin at (360)378-6975. As for junk vehicle removal, you will have to get the vehicle to San Juan first. Call Gene at Island Towing. In the past, he would pick up junk cars on island and haul them to the mainland for disposal for a very reasonable fee. call Gene at (360)378-7000. Hope this helps.

  6. New to island- ISO temp airplane parking and any help clearing tiedown spot.

Greetings new neighbors! My name is Ty and I’m so thrilled to be a new landowner on Stuart airpark. I recently acquired one of the small tiedown lots (north side of runway, east corner lot where two track/gravel road intersects runway midfield.) it’s a heavily wooded area and I’m going to be clearing it out so that I can use it for it’s designated purpose, as a tiedown for my plane as well as keeping a small Boston whaler on a trailer with towing tractor to launch. The wooded lot is exactly that, wooded, and I cannot park anything there for the time being. That being the case, where is the best place to temporarily park my plane for a few hours/days at a time while I’m up there clearing and leveling the area? Also, if anyone has a brush trimmer, tractor, heavy duty mower, box blade, or similar machinery that I could kindly borrow/rent/pay for your help to clear and level the area, I’d be greatly appreciative. Happy to help with airplane transports/shuttling/hauling in exchange. Lot has been professionally surveyed, 4 corners marked with white wood posts and flagging tape, and outline strewn with hot pink twine if you’re inclined to see the area. Thanks in advance! Ty,
    tmanegold at gmail dot com

    • Hello Tyler,
Most of the land on the north side of the runway is divided into individually owned tie down and hangar lots. There is a small area on the east end, north side, that is “load/unload” area. The area around the community building on the south side is available for all owners to park your plane. Also, the area on the west end, south side, is available, just don’t go beyond the mail shack and don’t block traffic.
Anyway, welcome aboard! Come over to the northeast corner – Camp Everyhappy – stop in some time.
      Regards, Greg Bruce

  7. I’m interested in getting our septic tank pumped out. Does anyone have a recommendation on a particular company? Would anyone be interested in having service done as well and sharing barge costs?

  8. From Harbor Propane: Oct. 1, 2020 Bob is trying to get a barge sharing trip together for new tank delivery and/or tank service in the next couple of weeks. Please call Bob at Harbor Propane at 360-378-0379 if you are interested.

    • Hi Fletch, i just signed up with Orcas Online. But… You have to be able to see either Saturna or Orcas Island. Also, I seem to get a decent signal from Tmobile when I am near the east end of the runway. Regards, Greg

  9. Greetings Stuart Island East neighbors!
Is anyone interested in cost sharing to bring Merles Masonry out to East Stuart to clean and/or repair your chimney this summer? It would be in July or August. Each family would pay the base rate of $171 + tax for their basic cleaning (or more if you have repairs done). Then we would all share the travel & barge costs which are approximately $985.00 + tax. (That’s the barge costs plus Merle,s travel time charges.)
Merles is located in Friday Harbor and can be checked out at merlesmasonry.com. This will be our first time using his company.
Please let me know if you want to join us by JUNE 26th, and then I will schedule with him. His crew is apparently quite busy. My email is gayle.davis@davisdeshaies.com.
    Thanks! Gayle & Norm Davis

  10. Hi all,

New washashores here, the Davis Family from Vashon. We’ll be up over the weekend and heading up again mid March or a little later with some stuff on the humpback.

If you see us, come say hi. We’ll be on the west end of the loop, or by the big cedar at “southwest parking”.

Also, please ping me if you’d like to share some space on the humpback. Dates are flexible.

    • Well Hello! Hey, now that I see a real message here you should be able to post on this forum without delay. I have it set up to review the first message, and if not spam, then just allow further messages without approval. You wouldn’t believe how much spam tries to make it onto this forum! Anyway, Welcome Greg

      • Thanks Greg, no spam here. Also, we would like to bring a truck full of material soon for improvements. Anytime April or May, though preferably early to mid May if there is interest in sharing the Humpback. Happy Spring.
        Sharon or John Boyd 360-472-1033

    • Hi, I’m looking for sharing the Humpback, around the end of April or into May for gas tank delivery from Harbor Propane. Since tank delivery takes up all of the Humpback, would be nice to share with someone else who needs a gas tank. Bob at Harbor said he thinks there might be other interest?
      Thanks,

  12. Hello! We are looking for on-island transportation. Something as simple as a 3-wheeler or quad, or a pickup truck. Please let me know what you might have available? Also, I am interested in paying someone to mow our yard so I can spend more time enjoying things and work on other projects up there. Thank you!

  13. Possible Barge Shares and Extra 5/8″ minus gravel

    Hi,
We have a barge coming over on July 11th at noon from Roche to Stuart. It will have a Browne Lumber delivery truck on it, but there should be extra room both ways if you are looking for a share.
On July 22nd around 8:30am we have a Barge coming over with a load of Gravel (5/8″ minus) we are getting 5 cubic yards of which we only need about 3. If someone is interested in the extra, I am happy to have them dump it at your place for $100.

Also looking for help digging some shallow footing holes around July 12th, happy to pay for the help.

    Thanks, Dave

  14. I have the humpback bringing a load over from Roche to SI 4/27, and then returning empty. Then, it will come back to SI empty on 4/30 and bring a load back from SI to Roche. Both are later in the afternoon. Let me know if interested.. Greg 253 312 9018

    • I’m trying to get a fridge over to Stuart asap. Looking to share a barge run with someone in the next three weeks or so. I can be ready anytime. Let me know. 360-298-5698

    • I will be moving date up to May 11 or 12. Still open to sharing the barge. Pls send response by email. Thanks, Ken

    • Hi Keith, my name is Hailey and I work for the electrical contractor that is replacing the back up generator at Turn Point for the USCG this summer. I was wondering if there was somewhere on the island that we could offload a travel trailer form a barge. I see you brought a car over and would love to know where you had the barge land. We thought that would be the best way to stay on the island since there isn’t many options.

      Thank you for your help,

      Hailey Koivu

      • Hailey, our boat ramp is on the east end of the island, and the light house is on the west end – no way to drive between the 2. I am not sure exactly how you offload a barge on the west end, I am sure you can but I just don’t know. Good luck and have fun, you’ll love it up at the light house its a special place.
        Greg

      • There is a ramp at the head of Reid Harbor adjacent to the park that would work for you. We have off loaded our two ton hay truck there several times in the past. Drive up the hill past the schoolhouse and out to the lighthouse. Should be no problem

  15. Well drilling recommendations? We are interested in having a well drilled. Who is best to use? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thank you!

    “Wine & Cheese” Party
    Mark your calendar for
    July 3rd

Just bring a bottle of wine & a cheese (or appetizer of your choice) to share.

This should be early enough without interfering with dinner plans or other July 4th family holiday activities.

We look forward to hosting this event & at the same time celebrating Stuart Island’s newest “Septuagenarian” (70 year young) birthdays.

    George & Charlene

  17. Change of plans, folks. Actually, several of us will turn 75 yo this season. So, Mary Alice and I will host a party for all of these youngsters and their neighbors on Stuart. . Stay tuned for time and date which is being negotiated…Ken

    • Happy birthday to all of you turning 75 this year. Hope it’s a great coming year for all. It’s the new 60, right?

Actually, here’s a posting about another matter some may already have heard about. I have a friend who neighbors the cabin on John’s Island that was burglarized. Sounds like some very blatant thieves took advantage of little attention or awareness of the problem. So heads up to that potential problem once again. I don’t know any more of the circumstances but I’m sure more details will be coming. Yikes. Not to be suspicious of unfamiliar faces, but just aware!

  18. A float with aluminum boat on top washed up on the beach west of the State Park in Prevost Harbor. The boat number is WN 6062 NH. I tied it to a big log but it would probably be destroyed if we get a big northeast wind. If one of you owns it, you should contact one of your fellow Stuart Easters to relocate it to a safe place.

  19. We will be returning to Stuart on/or about April 28 this year which is early for us “South of the Border” types. On either May 13 or 14 we will be holding a “Mary Alice is 75 Party”. All are invited to attend…watch for the details.
    Hasta luego…

  20. Hello Stuart Island,

We don’t live on Stuart Island but are looking at a property for sale there (500 Harbor Vista Dr) to live in full time. I have many questions about living on Stuart Island but I thought I would briefly introduce myself and my husband and let you toot Stuart Islands horn on your own so to speak. My husband Alan was born in Seattle (and I’m from Oklahoma originally via Port Angeles….yes I know, quite the “via”) but moved to Upstate New York to attend school and never left. He is an architect and builder and I’m an accountant (although I have a Master’s degree in Human Services) and gardener. Now we are old….well okay not old, 53 each, but the kids are gone, grandkids are in our lives (some who live in Sequim who we would love to convince to also live on the island) and we are missing the Pacific Northwest terribly (sorry for the negativity but I detest New York specifically and the east coast in general). We are social on a very small scale, love being involved with a small community, and are very self sufficient. We don’t even have cable tv (by choice), we use the internet occasionally for email and news and are avid sailors. We like the idea of the remoteness of Stuart Island. So tell us what you love about living there. We’d love to hear from everyone! zen4pamela@gmail.com. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

    • Well welcome to the island!
That’s a nice place your getting, on a great part of the island. We have some really good neighbors here. Most of us are part timers, some come up for short visits in the summer, some live most of the summer on island, and a few others live on the island year round.
Are you guys pilots as well, or will you boat in?
Don’t be too disappointed if there are not many comments here, this site doesn’t get all that much traffic, especially as the season is winding down.
Anyway, welcome aboard, I look forward to meeting you guys.
      Greg Bruce

      • Not pilots unfortunately. We will be sailing in (and out). Thanks for your response. We haven’t fully commited to buy yet. We are comparing several properties on a few of the San Juan Islands. We like a fairly close knit community and this was our way of putting feelers out about Stuart Island.

  21. I was on Stuart August 27, 2015 to August 31, 2015. During that time there was a major windstorm in the Seattle area. My wife and I did not experience this storm on Stuart. I would conclude that there was not any major damage on the island. Jim

  22. Today, September 1, 2015, I went to my plane which was parked by the old hangar, now association meeting place. I had parked it there for three days during the recent wind storm.
I did an inspection of the plane and noticed that one of the twist locks on the cowling flap was open. That should never be open and cannot open by itself. I saw no issues inside the engine compartment, so continued my pre flight inspection.
I started the plane and and saw that my left fuel tank was empty and the right one was half full. When I parked the plane, both tanks were half full.
It is s a federal offense to tamper with an aircraft.
I will notify the San Juan County Sheriff’s office.

    • Ted,
We are so sorry to hear about the theft of fuel from your plane-what a sad testimony to our island community’s integrity.
      Ursula&Jim Andrews (Kirsten Andrews’ parents)

  23. Possible 1 ton dump bed truck to Stuart in the middle of August. I am taking a 300 gal. water tank and have room for additional cargo- share cost. I am not available 7-20 to 8-9. Email me at ursulajim @earthlink.net

  24. You are invited:
    “Wine & Cheese” Party
    July 4th
    5:00 (ish)
    George & Charlene Renquist’s Cabin
Just bring a bottle of wine & a cheese (or appetizer, your choice) to share. This should be early enough to kick off the holiday weekend without interfering with dinner plans or boating to the Roche fireworks. We look forward to seeing all of our Stuart Island neighbors. George & Charlene

  25. Barge share for Tom & Donna.
If you are interested in sharing a barge July 9, leaving Stuart Island at 9:00 (or earlier if leaving Roche Harbor to Stuart Island), please contact Mark Green or the Humpback.

    • I need to move a planer/joiner from Stuart to Roche. If there is a vehicle leaving Stuart, I would like to discuss.

  28. Hi folks,
We were on the island this past weekend (Oct. 4-6) and I happened to notice that the map that I had made for emergency services location that was hanging in the community hanger has gone missing. Does anybody have any idea what happened to it??

    Thanks
    Robert

    • Robert,

I asked the board members if anyone knew anthing about it. None did, and Denny went over to the building and checked in the locked room to see if it was placed in there. Nope. So far no answers for you, sorry.
      Greg

  29. Hi folks;
This is Andrea Aldridge, Judy Lord’s daughter. We were thinking of getting a little larger boat next year and we’d
have to put it on a float or buoy. Mud Bay is so full of floats and buoys now that putting another one down, as well as being a big operation, would just crowd the waterway even more. Is there anyone who would consider selling us your float or buoy? Or renting us time on your float or buoy for a few days a month? We can only make it up one weekend a month as it is because we’re still working slobs, so it would be pretty open. You can contact us by either leaving a note in the Aldridge mailbox (the top left one – April thru early October) or email us at:

    Andrea —- rakshasa7@hotmail.com
    Robert —- mystyx@frontier.com

    Thanks –
    Andrea and Robert

  30. Hey, folks! Is there any intention of having a potluck over the Labour Day Weekend? Because if so, we found a recipe for a killer Grilled Potato Salad without any mayo. Grilled onions, potatoes and a hint of herb dressing. I know quite a few folks won’t be there, but maybe a smaller gathering? How’s about it? Anybody up for it? 🙂

    Andrea & Robert

  31. Hi folks,
Any advice on the best and fastest way from Seattle to Stuart East? I am coming up Saturday 8/10. I could drive to Bellingham for a plane, but prefer to fly from Seattle, maybe land in Roche, get a boat pickup? Any advice would be appreciated. Looks like some of the airlines from Seattle, 1 person still has to charter the whole plane, and I’m coming alone Saturday. Thanks!
Also, dad is coming up with the 1 ton truck Friday, so if y’all need anything delivered, ping me this week.
    Cheers,
    Kirsten kandrews@gorge.net

  32. Stolen Dinghy

Horizon brand, a little like a Livingston. Built in Delta BC. 8’ long, white hull, blue bottom paint, tan interior. Horizon sticker on the aft topsides. Identifiable features are a white plastic pad for motor on the inside of the transom and the Bow seat/air tank has been repaired with fiberglass that is not painted. No outboard was installed but a pair of nicely varnished oars were on board.

Boat was stolen from the Stuart Island Airpark community dock at Prevost Harbor between 18:30 July 17th and 10:30 July 18th 2013. I tied it up myself so I’m sure it did not just drift away. Sad day for Stuart Islanders.

  33. I will be taking a 1 ton dump bed truck to Stuart this summer in order to take a 300 gallon water tank to the island. Date is unsure, but probably sometime in August. I would have room for additional cargo going to Stuart and I would be empty coming back. Telephone number on owners list (but the email address is wrong – should be -ursulajim@earthlink.net). Contact me, if you are interested. Jim Andrews

  34. At the annual Stuart Island Homeowners Association General Meeting on May 26, Ron Garner, San Juan Island Fire Department, provided information regarding the “Fire Wise” fire protection program. Ron agreed to come back to Stuart Island to give a more in depth presentation to help safeguard our community from fire threat.

Ron will give his presentation at George & Charlene Renquist’s cabin on June 11 at 10:00 am.
Property owners are encouraged to attend this meeting & learn more to protect our island community.

  36. Hello all,
We are looking to purchase a dinghy. Ideally something inflatable, with a hard inner bottom so dogs don’t create punctures, in the neighborhood of 8-10′ long. Would also be looking for an appropriate motor to power it. Will at times leave it at the dock, others put it on davits and take it with us.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Fletch

  37. All,
When you leave a message on this forum for the first time the comment will not be posted until I take a look at it and approve it. I get an email with your post and I can usually approve it pretty quickly. Once I have approved your first post you can post again in the future without further approval needed from me. This is one way to stop the messages that spammers try to put on our forum. You wouldn’t believe how many attempts are made to put some strange post on here. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

    • After about 20 years, Sue and I have decided to sell the cabin.
It’s the original “spec” Panabode cabin that was built in early
1960’s for the Airpark. It’s halfway down on the North side of the runway. It’s a turnkey sale including the 1993 17ft. Boston Whaler with 100 HP Evinrude and 6HP kicker motor with all the fishing pots, downrigger etc. Also all the furnishing inside the cabin stay. We remodeled it when we bought it with new kitchen, stove, refrigerator and new Bruce hardwood floors.
Too much to list! Price: $147,500 cash. Let me know if interested.

  38. I have the Humpback scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2013 to state park boat ramp at 2:30 and off at 10 am Tuesday May 28, 2013. Room for deck load both ways as I will have a pickup and small U-Haul as well as the opposite trips.

    • Hi, Are you still looking for a ride share on the humpback? Thanks. Peggy (we are in Reid Harbor near the park boat launch).

  40. Is it possible that we could add a permanent link on the website to the road names? We are making a plat map to know who is where, and it would help. Thanks!

  41. Hi All,

I changed this forum so that the newest entry will be on the top of the list. This makes more sense to me, especially if we ever have much traffic on this site. Thanks

  42. Sorry to intrude on your local website, but we get a lot of boxes delivered for folks around the area. Just trying to get them to the owners. Here are two more: Robert Watt addressed to the Stuart Island Airpark? And one for Nelson F. Teren Stuart Island Airway Park as well. thanks…

    • Thanks Cindy for the information. I’ve relayed the note to Ted Teren and to the Watts at the most current email that I have for them. I don’t know Cheryl Opalski, maybe someone else can contact her.

      Thanks again, Greg

  43. Hi,
Can anyone help me contact Cheryl Opalski? We have two packages here at Roche Harbor Front Desk that have been shipped to her, but delivered here. Please tell her to call us at 360.378.2155 asap.
    Thank you for your help,
    Cindy Torrey
Front Desk Manager, Roche Harbor Resort.

    • I passed on that information. Sorry for the confusion. As for the other packages for Stuart Island, can they be taken to the post office there at Roche Harbor? That way when the mail is picked up they can make it out to Stuart.
      Thank you for contacting us!

  44. seems those druggies are still running their boat to and from roche, are you stuart residents still graced with their presence?

    • As per a recent arrest yes they still have a problem with them. A woman was arrested and in court yesterday for a Felony charge of “Vessel Theft”! She stole the boat from Roche went to Suart, Pictures were taken, the boat was loaded with stolen goods. Just so happened that a car was stolen in FH town limits drove to Roche, then the above mentioned boat was stolen, the car theft is still under investigation, but the timeline points to L***a,,,,she is a heavey METH user and well known on SJI…..There re alot more details….Stuart residents should check with the court house. Stuart you are under attack and we need your help with running them out of the County!

      • I am concerned about the thieves that are preying on islanders. We are networking to try to rid our islands of these parasites and bottom feeders. Let me know if I can help on this end. (San Juan) 360-941-4434. Nancy Wampler.

    • If there is an issue with theft and drugs and people utilizing Stuart Island as a base, this is information that shouldn’t be buried in a message forum but should be brought to everyone’s attention. There are some of us who are on Stuart Island during the winter, so give us a heads up so we know who/what to look for. The house we save could be YOURS! We are either over on Stuart about one a week or so, or have friends who are over there. So we are happy to keep a watchful eye out for no-goodniks!

  45. Greetings;

After reading the above comments I would appreciate an email with the blocked out info. This is the first I have heard of the problem. As a retired but still connected Seattle Police Officer i may be of some help. Some of you old timers may remember me ridding the island of thief’s back in the 70’s that were squatting on the island and stealing. I sent them away on there boat never to return.

  46. just in, scrappers headed out from roche 5pm yesterday, does anyone worry that these drug dealing criminals are routinely reporting to work over there on stuart this late in the afternoon and probably working at night over there? please do not enable them, they have plagued our island far too long, ps check your fuel drums.

  47. Stuart Island School would like to thank all those that supported the Little Wolf PTSA Raffle this summer. The lucky tickets were drawn yesterday at school. Long time Stuart Island resident Vivian Schroth won the paving stone and also a long time resident Barbara Schloredt won the quilt.
Thank you for making this a successful fundraiser!

  48. Thanks for the info but we’re not going to post the names, I’m not comfortable leaving that info on the message board.

  49. As this is not anonymous, I’d hope you’d post the names of the following people as being those mentioned above. Understandably, when dealing with criminals, many are reluctant to be anything but anonymous. As I am only passing on verified information, and as the criminals with whom I’ve dealt have had more to fear from me than I of them, here are the names to which referred: ****** *****, ***** ******, ***** (******’s driver). After a long run of activity, ****** is currently facing charges in San Juan County; I am informed that, as he has been directed by the Court to wear an ankle bracelet locator, he may not be available to score thefts for a while.

  50. Hey SJI Concerned,

I’ve editted your comment to remove the names. I’m a little reluctant to post names on here, especially in posts that are from anonymous contributors. Don’t misunderstand, I appreciate the warning about these guys and maybe this will put our neighbors on notice to keep their eyes open.

    Regards, Greg

  51. i notice you nice folks of stuart are very trusting and it doesn’t seem that many of your fuel drums are locked nor are there many loud dogs around to warn you at 3am, these guys don’t sleep like the rest of us and they steal for a living,or should i say “existance”

  52. Be careful of who you are letting on your island ******* ****** *****, and his crew of druggies and thieves will steal from you and your Family. They are meth user’s and well known theives on San Juan Island. One of the guys out there is ***** ******, he has a warrant for his arrest. ****** ***** has been in court here every week to deal with his last burglary. These are bad people, very dangerous. Beware!

  53. John, I took the liberty of copying your message to this spot..
