We received notice that one of our neighbors cabin was broken into in early October. What follows is the note from the owners. This is really a shame – we are a small community of considerate owners, the thought that someone would break in to one of our homes is really a shame. Let’s really make an effort to look out for each other, maybe we should start questioning people we don’t recognize? What follows comes from the owners…
From Greg and Janelle Fritz:
We are writing to just let you know what has recently happened to our cabin. It has been a bit of a surprise to us as we have had a cabin on Stuart Island for 30 years and have never had any problem with vandalism until now.
On October 2 my husband received a voicemail from Chris Pack letting us know that our fire alarms were going off for a couple days so he went over to check them out. He could not find our key but said the front door had been broken into. He said he could not see any other obvious vandalism. We attempted to go up to the Island the weekend of the 16th to replace our door but our boat broke down. We finally made it up the weekend of the 23rd to replace the door. I have attached pictures of the door as we found it.
We did not find any obvious theft or further vandalism, no footprints into the house. Nothing obvious except for the broken door knob and door.
The whole thing just makes us really sad. It has always been such a safe place. I don’t have to tell you the costs involved in just ferrying up there, chartering boats to get a door there, buying the door, etc.
There is nothing we are really asking for you to do. We just thought it would be important to let you know in case there is a run of vandalism up there. We have contacted authorities in Friday Harbor but have not officially filed a report.
