Is coming on the 15th and the 16th..
We thought it might be fun to have our island animals recognized! If you have a dog, a favorite deer, cat, chicken, lamb, cockatiel, get me a picture and a short bio and I’ll post it. Might be fun. Today we start with one of my favorites…
Well I always thought most of our pets are better than most of us people right? So we are going to highlight the animals in our life. Today we begin with Rufus, a big dog in a little body!! Randy and Jamie recently lost Rufus.
If you ever walked on the beach on Johns Pass you met Rufus. We asked Jamie and Randy Thompson to write a couple words about him. Here is what they wrote..
Rufus , alias Rufus Dufus, or Rufie Boy. Lived Aug 2003- Oct 2019 Little dog with a big dog attitude. Also affectionately called ”the sheriff“ when in the presence of other dogs. He would run up and down the beach barking and biting at waves. Known for his voracious appetite and lack of discernment, he would eat deer poop, salmon carcass, and even a dead bird. Meal time was his highlight and he would sit upright for minutes begging for food at the table. A great walker, he hiked Tip-Top many times. He was my best buddy and I will always miss him. Jamie and Randy Thompson
Hello fellow islanders!
For some time now we’ve talked about offering fresh grocery delivery from Costco and/or Fred Myer in Bellingham to Stuart Island by air (actually, any store that does delivery will work, but we know these two have fresh food!) We’ve already made this service a reality on San Juan and Orcas, and now we’re trying to bring it to Stuart (at least seasonally.)
I’ve put together a web page with information about how we want to do this and what the requirements would be and how we can do this for a reasonable cost. The link below will take you to an information page, with a sign up sheet. You’re not obligated when you sign up, we’re just trying to gauge the need and interest and get this all lined up to make it easy and effective.
All the details are here: https://secure.sanjuanairlines.com/grouptransportinfo.asp

ALSO – Special Airport Parking in Bellingham for islanders!
Additionally, we have parking spots available at the Bellingham Airport, just across from our facility. Permits for Islanders are $180 a year. Details are attached.
Please pass this on to others not listed on the ‘to’ line. This list may be a little old and isn’t necessarily comprehensive.
Many thanks,

As you may know a bright light in the many bright stars of our island people has been QuinSerra Robert Stanley. She came with her sister Jeannette Roberts and blessed us for a few years with her warm smile, gentle embrace and reverence for all living things. Everyone who met her loved and loves her.
QuinSerra has been ill and plans to eventually be buried in the Stuart Island cemetery. She greatly appreciates the community’s loving thoughts.
I got this note from a guy looking for property on our island, so I told him if post this. You never know.. I think he was interested in the West end mostly, but this note is also meant for our end of Stuart.
I have been looking for property on the west end of the island but nothing is for sale. If anyone is thinking of selling my email is tim1h2@gmail.com

Hi, I’m looking for sharing the Humpback, around the end of April or into May for gas tank delivery from Harbor Propane. Since tank delivery takes up all of the Humpback, would be nice to share with someone else who needs a gas tank. Bob at Harbor said he thinks there might be other interest?
Thanks,
Sharon or John Boyd

from Vince… (thanks Vince)
“Well a bit of dry finally arrived. Bob’s hanger west is semi firm ( winter firm). Use the center of runway stay off of sides and east end ( still very soft). And keep your eyes open as someone is driving heavy machinery on the runway and cars. So there are some rather large ruts”
Mark Green informed me that the Humpback will be out of service from March 20th until April 5th, due to maintenance and inspections. Plan accordingly! Thanks Mark
UPDATE Friday, 2/21/2020
“Things continue to improve with the dry weather, and sunshine. Runway is now winter normal. No midfield parking be very cautious as it gets very soft towards the sides both north and south East end of runway.”
Thanks Vince
UPDATE Thursday, 2/13/2020
Vince sent us his Friday update on Thursday, and it sounds much better. If you have small tires I’d still be pretty careful!! Thanks Vince
“Ok so didn’t want to wait till Friday. Things have improved. Water is down and the runway is soft but usable for those familiar with Winter landings. Come on up! Camp everhappy? Bring your boots.”
UPDATE Friday, 2/7/2020
It sounds like a mess.. thanks for the update Vince
“Ok the weather gods are going to make me say it. Don’t land! Everything is a mess. The water is upto the roads on both sides and it’s prop strike for sure.
Need just a few days of dry.”
UPDATE Friday, 1/31/2020
STILL SLOPPY
from Vince
“Walked the runway this morning, was hoping for some improvement but hard rains last night and today undid the drainage of Thursday…we need three days no rain. You can still land west of Bob’s hanger keep away from the sides. And unless you have tundra tires stay off the East end….feet get wet just standing there. Plan on no breaks and fly safe.”
UPDATE Friday 1/24/2020
Neighbor, and pilot, Vince Brotherton is on the island more than most of us, and he is going to try to keep us updated on the runway condition. Here is his latest report…
“Due to extreme high tides, low pressure and abundance of rain the runway is extremely soft to the east. Recommend landing after Bob’s hanger center of runway. No parking community hanger. Boaters be advised a lot of driftwood and deadheads, Reid harbor is mined with crab traps.”
Thanks Vince, keep them coming

Our island had a lot of snow last week. The slow melt, and the recent rain, has left the runway really wet. Please be careful. The west end is wet, like it sometimes gets. What I noticed different now is that the area of runway, right near the community building, is really wet. Beware!
